The petty is the Japanese equivalent of a paring knife. The length and height of a petty make this blade more versatile than a paring knife.

There is something that sets Nigara Hamono apart from other families of knife makers in Japan. Firstly, it is worth noting that they have 350 years of history, starting with the manufacture of swords for the Tsugaru clan at the beginning of the Edo period. The transmission of knowledge and skills over eight generations has undoubtedly given Nigara knives their cultural DNA, but their long history is not unique to Nigara.
One could say that having a legendary fifth-generation blacksmith—Japan’s national treasure, Mr. Kunitoshi Nigara (二 唐 國俊)—gives the family brand a high status. The best way to understand why Nigara stands out is through the eyes of the current (eighth) generation blacksmith, Mr. Tsuyoshi Yoshizawa (吉澤 剛). As he stands in the family business’s workshop with his younger brother and two young craftsmen, he feels inspired to create the most remarkable knives in the world.
The Nigara family has expanded since the days of sword forging – into construction steel mills, steel beam technologies, and the restoration of historic metal structures. In a word, Nigara is the guru of steel.
