Nakagawa-san apprenticed with the legendary master blacksmith Kenichi Shiraki, founder of the Shiraki Hamono brand, eventually becoming its head after Shiraki-san retired. In 2005, Nakagawa-san changed the brand name to Nakagawa Hamono.
Today, Nakagawa-san is a renowned blacksmith when it comes to high-end, handcrafted cutlery. He works with all types of steel, but his mastery of heat treatment is particularly evident with Ginsan, Aogami #1, and Shirogami #1 steels.
